Chapter 13

“I knew I could count on you.” Leslie took Francis’s bag and rummaged through it. “Here you go, two new ones. And what have we here? Thank you, Francis?”

“What did you find?” Eliza peered over at the papers.

“More intel. You think I chased Francis away solely because I’m a raging pregnant bitch?” Leslie set a stapled pile of papers on the table.

“This is a forty-seven-page draft of acceptable wedding party behavior.” Eliza skimmed it. “Forty of the pages focus on the bridesmaids. Grooming, swearing, bikini waxes… did you know there’s a weekend of mandatory sexual harassment training for the firefighters?”

“You aren’t allowed to change your mind now. Finish your questionnaires,” Leslie warned her and turned to a different stack of papers.

Eliza rapidly completed her two packets and handed them back to Leslie. “What are you reading now?”

“Now, this is interesting. I’d wondered why word of the wedding never spread beyond the CCFD. The mayor’s office and Fitzpatrick cut deals with all the major news outlets. Exclusive access, rights, sponsorships, announcements. It’s all here.”

“It doesn’t explain the reason the fire department hasn’t said anything,” Eliza pointed out.

“Someone must be internally suppressing it then. Waiting to see what happens. Remember, this could be very good or very bad.” Leslie kept going through the bag.

“Anything else?” Eliza asked because Leslie caught her breath when she pulled out a handwritten list of names.

Leslie forced herself to remain calm. “If I wasn’t sure someone was making a power play, I am now.”

“Why?” Eliza picked up the paper. “Most of the names on here are from Firehouse 15 and MetroGen.”

“I noticed. Even their new rookie, Bianca Lincoln, is getting tapped after being there for less than a month. She must meet a demographic gap.”

Eliza chewed on her lip. “She’s not the one who worries you.”

“There’s a list of names crossed out. The He and She Carvers are crossed out. They must have said ‘no’ already.”

“So did someone named Abby Finster.”

“That would be Chief Baker’s sister. She lives in Minnesota or Wisconsin and has a harsher tongue even than me,” Leslie said. “She probably told them to take their offer and shove it.”

“Instead, they got Marcus Doyle representing the ER as assistant chief. And they got Judah Weiss, one of my residents, on board.”

“Recheck the list,” Leslie said mournfully. She waited for Eliza to read the list in its entirety.

Eliza’s eyes were wide. “Ballsy of them to have Daniel, Kayla, and the ex-wife Jessica on here.”

“They should have never been on one list, even if you didn’t count including the Carvers… and there’s… never mind.”

“What are you talking about?” Eliza took a pen and crossed off Kyra and her husband Ryan, and then Jennifer too.

“Nothing.” Leslie hoped her tone wouldn’t give her away.

Eliza wasn’t fooled and zeroed in on one of the final names on the list. “Who is Rafe Falcon?”

Leslie chose her next words carefully. “He retired from Firehouse 15 almost three years ago.”

“That’s all?”

“All I can say.”

Eliza pursed her lips as Leslie’s voice trailed off.
